BAD AD

As the old saying goes, "Warning: this is a derivative work. May be disrespectful to character image." May be? Is there really any doubt?

So, advertisements. Do they work? Does seeing scantily clad women eating burgers make you hungry? And does it make you hungry for burgers? And does it make you specifically hungry for burgers from one specific establishment? The other day I saw a pretty long commercial with singing and dancing, and I guess it was for Target, or something, but it didn't make me want to shop there; it made me question the sanity of their advertising wing. What's the deal with commercials that have nothing to do with the product(s) in question? Maybe they were just trying to get people to remember the ad, and by extension what it was for? The humor route is probably more efficient for that, but I'm not sure that really works, either.

I don't think I've ever been convinced to buy a product due to an ad. The only times when an advertisement led to me buying something was when I was genuinely unaware of the product's existence. If there had been a five second ad saying "This product exists! Buy it at this store!", it would have been just as effective. Maybe I'm missing something. Companies wouldn't pour so much money into ads (taking 1/3 of TV time!) if they didn't work. Then again, very large numbers of people have been very wrong on very important things for a very long time before.

Maybe there's something more subtle going on here. Maybe when a beer commercial shows Suika some guy and his buddies drinking while watching the game, it isn't the obvious "you'll be popular and socially adept if you drink", but the more subtle "normal people drink while watching the game. You aren't some kind of freak, are you?" Jokes on you; I don't watch sports. But... I'm probably overthinking it.

What do you guys think? Are you swayed by advertisements, or are you just as confused as I am?
